Boxing Terminology - Quick Guide
Boxing has its own rhythm and language. Understanding the basic terms helps you train with more confidence and follow instructions smoothly during sessions. Here’s a quick guide to some of the key words and concepts you’ll hear in the gym:
Jab
A quick, straight punch thrown with the lead hand. It sets up combinations, maintains distance, and keeps your opponent under pressure.
Cross
A powerful straight punch delivered with the rear hand. Often used after the jab, it’s one of boxing’s most effective strikes when timed correctly.
Hook
A circular punch aimed at the side of the head or body. It builds power from rotation and balance, teaching how to use your whole body to generate force.
Uppercut
An upward punch that travels from the waist toward the chin. Great for close-range situations, it develops strength, accuracy, and explosive movement.
Guard
Your defensive position — keeping your hands up to protect your head and body. Maintaining a solid guard is the foundation of all effective boxing.
Footwork
The art of moving efficiently in the ring. Good footwork keeps you balanced, in range to strike, and able to avoid punches with control.
Combination

Sparring
